Books

When you become a NALS member (see networking), you receive these two very useful publications:

A 48-page well illustrated handbook on lily culture by Virginia Howie. This an excellent beginner's guide to lily culture. It covers many of the aspects of lily enjoyment on a basic level. You will find yourself referring to it again and again.

Also available on www.amazon.com.

A 32 page well illustrated handbook by Edward A. McRae, intended to help the home gardener recognize, understand and control lily diseases. It would be amiss to have you think lilies are disease free. Like any plants you grow in your garden there are diseases that affect lilies. However, by recognizing a problem, you can take the steps necessary to eliminate it and prevent reoccurrence. Covers viral diseases, fungal diseases, physiological disease as well as a few others.

Other books you may find useful (sometimes available through your regional lily society):

Lilies are among the most glamorous and exotic of plants, yet they are surprisingly easy to cultivate in a wide range of temperate climates -there is a lily perfect for almost every region in North America! The lily's increasing popularity as both a cut flower and a garden subject is well deserved, and this handsome volume combines the flower's unrivaled visual allure with a wealth of practical information on growing and gardening with these romantic garden favorites. The book is organized into three main sections. The introduction examines the history of lilies and explores their versatility in the garden. The second section, "Choosing Lilies," is a photographic portrait gallery of over 100 different lilies, capturing their essential beauty and showcasing the vast range of flower forms and colors. The third section, "Growing Lilies," contains a wealth of practical information on planting, nurturing, and propagating lilies with clear, step-by-step photographs.

This book is geared to experienced gardeners, horticulturists, and botanists. McRae provides techniques for hybridizing and explains the biology of the lily plant. He discusses propagation, cultivation, diseases, and pests, and explains how lilies can be used in the garden. A chapter on exhibiting lilies is followed by one on growing them around the world and one on commercial bulb production. A large portion of the book is a list of various species and hybrids with a detailed description of each. The author, who has developed many hybrids himself, also gives brief sketches of some prominent lily hybridizers. The text is augmented by 108 color photographs and eight botanical prints.
